Why it’s Worth It to Be a Responsible Driver

Driving is such a commonplace skill that most people consider it second nature. It’s easy for us to perch in our cars and take to the streets without the slightest concern for the considerable risks involved in operating a motor vehicle. At any moment however, hazardous conditions on the road could cause devastating traffic collisions. In fact, driving is one of the most dangerous activities a person can perform in light of how congested and unpredictable highways are. All this danger is made exponentially worse when drivers engage in reckless driving.

What is Reckless Driving:
The California Vehicle Code defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle in a manner which demonstrates willful or wanton disregard for the safety of other people. Not only does this include performing dangerous maneuvers on roads or highways, it also includes driving vehicles on sidewalks or off-street facilities such as Parking areas. Any person who engages in reckless driving that proximately causes injury either to themselves, or other bystanders, is subject to imprisonment for a minimum of 30 days – 6 months. Reckless drivers are also subject to be fined up to $1,000 depending on the situation.

Reckless Driving has Consequences:
While the health and safety risks associated with reckless driving are obvious to anyone with common sense, did you know that reckless driving can permanently impact your insurance rates too? A bad driving record automatically compels most insurers to raise the rates they charge for auto coverage. The more blemishes on a driver’s record, the harder it is to find affordable insurance. This is why when it comes to traffic offenses, it’s far better to be safe than to be sorry. Reckless driving in particular can end up causing damage that stays with people for an entire lifetime. There’s no sense in risking fines or jail-time over the need to be fast and furious in your car. So drive responsibly.
