10 Signs You Might be Sharing the Road with a Drunk Driver

The only thing worse than being involved in a drunk driving incident, is being a victim of one.  Collisions perpetrated by impaired drivers draw so much outrage for the culprits, that casualties are sometimes forgotten in the aftermath.  According to research conducted by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes involving drunk drivers every day. This translates into one death, every 50 minutes, directly attributable to alcohol-impaired driving. An average of 130 million drunk driving collisions happen every year.

Heads Up Behind the Wheel:

Aside from issuing stern warnings, not much else can be done to prevent irresponsible people from making bad choices.  However, there are indeed some ways that disciplined drivers can protect themselves from impaired ones.  The key is to practice situational awareness.  Every time you get behind the wheel, go the extra mile to pay attention to your surroundings, and maximize your alertness.  Make defensive driving your highest priority, and be prepared to react to any erratic driving you might notice.  Here are a few warning signs that a fellow motorist might be driving drunk:

1. Abrupt or illegal turns.
2. Delayed response to road conditions.
3. Driving with the headlights off.
4. Either driving too slow, or driving too fast.
5. Unpredictable braking.
6. Inconsistent use of turn signals.
7. Relentless tailgating.
8. Weaving around in traffic.
9. Wide turns or straddling Lanes.

                    10. Disobedience of posted traffic signs.

If you ever observe this kind of behavior in a driver you’re sharing the road with, modify your speed calmly to increase your distance from them.  If they’re driving ahead of you, slowdown so that you can easily come to a stop long before crossing their path.  If they’re driving behind you, merge into the most distant lane from them as possible and either slow down, or speed up to exit their proximity.
